Various works by Deborah Potter

I do quite a bit of creative work, ranging from drawing in pastel pencil to bead weaving to jewelry making. I have a teaching certificate in hobby ceramics, and I enjoy crocheting and counted cross-stitch when I have the time.  I also am a very amateur photographer, and I play around a bit with computer graphics, as evidenced by the portal on our opening page here.  Drawing is not really my forté, but I'll post an excerpt from one of my pieces here, along with the tale that goes with it.

This is a photo of the Moreton Bay fig in Santa Barbara, CA, a truly magnificent tree seeming perfectly content to thrive on its very small patch of land surrounded by concrete and traffic fumes.  If you're in the city, it's a must-see.

Love beyond Reckoning - It is said that once there lived a lady of the autumn who was well cherished by her people for her deep love and abiding care of them.  She protected them from famine and hardship, and through her guidance her warriors protected their lands from neighboring warlords.  But the warlords united in secret and plotted to rid themselves of the lady, not by killing her but by selling her in degradation and slavery to the distant courts of Rome.  Creating a false attack to draw away the lady's warriors, her enemy snuck in and stole her away, leading her men a long, harsh and futile chase across the rocky countryside to the sea, where their lady was thrown on a boat and swept away.  Heartbroken but filled with rage, the warriors defeated the warlords and set up a guard to hold the lady's lands in trust, while their boldest warrior followed to rescue her.  Two years passed while he followed her trail, until he at last found himself enslaved in the arena as a barbarian gladiator.  There he gained fame and the admiration of the people, and also the longing eye of a sorceress.  She bought him and took him to her estate near Rome, where she would use him for gain in the arena.  There he found his lady, serving under guard in the house of a neighbor, and through other servants he arranged their escape.  But his new mistress learned of the plan and followed, setting her guards upon them both.  As the warrior defended his lady he was drawn away from her, and the sorceress crept in and cast a terrible spell, throwing the lady into another time, another dimension, without memory or hope of who she was.  The sorceress died at the warrior's hands, and he set out anew to find his lady, haunting the places of magic until he could learn her fate and travel after her.  He follows across time, seeking his lady, his sword inscribed with the words of fate.  One day she will be found, one day she will be free, and will call unto her again her beloved warriors and regain her court to start anew.   (If you are familiar with runes, you can translate the words on his sword.  "I am Love, Beyond Time, Beyond Memory, Beyond Reckoning.")
